As per reliable sources on social media, the scion of the Nehru-Gandhi family and Vice-President of the Indian National Congress (INC), Rahul Gandhi, might be admitted in AIIMS due to a drug overdose.
So far, there has been no official confirmation of this news, but neither has it been denied by Congress spokespersons or those close to the Nehru-Gandhi family.
Cloak of secrecy around Nehru-Gandhis
The Nehru Gandhi dynasty holds a special position in the rough and tumble politics of Bharat and its civil society. The dynasty boasts of 3 Prime Ministers (Jawaharlal Nehru, his daughter Indira Gandhi, and Indira’s son Rajiv Gandhi) & one de-facto PM in the form of Rajiv’s Italian wife Sonia Gandhi who led UPA-1 & 2 as Congress President while Manmohan Singh was installed as the dummy PM. Through a carefully cultivated system of supporters and sympathizers in media, bureaucracy, judiciary and civil society, there has always been an aura of mystery around the dynasty.
In a day and age when public figures are put under the scanner and every bit of their private lives analyzed by sensation chasing newspapers and 24×7 news channels thirsty for every bit of news, the Nehru-Gandhis have remained immune, aloof. As powerful politicians in the world’s largest democracy, one would expect the foreign trips and health details of Sonia and Rahul Gandhi to be widely discussed as these are topics of public concern. But this is not the case – almost all media houses are extremely reluctant to air anything that might even remotely upset this ‘first family’. Themysterious illness that struck Sonia Gandhi in 2011, for which she had to travel out of the country for a month, is still unknown to the citizens of this country.
And when it comes to Sonia, there is an eerie absence of criticism for the way she has presided over the scam-ridden, disastrous UPA-1 & 2 regimes, and overseen the once mighty Congress reduced to ruling over barely 6% of the nation’s population. Nothing much has changed as far as MSM is concerned since this 2013 blog post titled ‘Why this secrecy over Sonia Gandhi?‘ appeared. The question raised then is still valid today –
“Why is it that the mainstream media (MSM) displays, what can only be termed as pusillanimity bordering on the obsequious when it comes to Sonia Gandhi? There is a certain docile, rebarbative and delightfully ludicrous air about the MSM each time Sonia Gandhi (or one of her family members) is in the middle of a controversy.”
Only two answers seem plausible when it comes to explaining this MSM omerta (mafia code of silence about criminal activity) over Sonia Gandhi – greed and fear. It is only after the advent of social media, that measured & objective criticism of the Nehru Gandhis is finally being heard.
Rahul Gandhi’s history with drugs and parties
It is a poorly kept secret in Lutyen’s Delhi that Rahul Gandhi and his girlfriend were arrested at Boston Airport, USA, in 2001 for carrying 1,60,000 USD cash and holding white powder (believed to be cocaine). He was let off by US authorities after a high-level intervention by the NDA Government at the behest of then NSA Brajesh Mishra (considered close to the Nehru-Gandhi family).
Then, just 3 days after the horrific 26/11 terror attack on Mumbai which left 164 dead and 308 wounded, Rahul Gandhi was seen partying till 5 am in a Delhi farmhouse.
Wikileaks revealed that a 2005 cable written by then US Ambassador to Bharat, David Mulford, quoted influential columnist and political insider Saeed Naqvi (considered close to the dynasty) as saying that Rahul Gandhi suffered from “personality problems” of an emotional or psychological nature. Are these psychological problems the result of drug abuse, or the cause? None in media thought it worthwhile to follow up on this explosive revelation, especially regarding a man that many media worthies were projecting as a PM candidate during the 2014 Lok Sabha elections.
In light of the above, it is hard not to take the reports about Rahul Gandhi being admitted in AIIMS due to a drug overdose seriously. It is in the interest of the citizens of this nation that either Rahul’s family or the Congress party come clean on this serious issue.
